Old apple trees cooled the afternoon with their shade, as lights twinkled a trail up their gnarled trunks. They gripped at branches laden with tin cans filled with daisies and baby's breath. Ice buckets chilled jars of lemonade and tea as friends and family celebrated. We danced among them, as evening fell.

Like Father, Like Sons
J. and W. have their hands full with two little boys. While little D. is trying to nap, K. is wrangling up some cattle. "Rope them bulls!" All a little boy needs is his cowboy boots, his hat, and his Dad.

Steel Wool
There is a spark of battery on steel, a whoosh of the swinging chain, and a shower of hot sparks. The night comes alive as fire rains down in a show of spectacular light.

Magnolia Mound
I visited my dad in Baton Rouge last October. We spent a week and a half glued to the couch watching Battlestar Galactica, reading by the pool in beautifully hot weather, and enjoying each others company. Before I left, I wanted to visit a local plantation.
Magnolia Mound is rich in southern culture and old beauty. Eunice spoke with kind eyes as she guided us around the main home sharing with us the intricacies of the deep south. As we wandered through the buildings and cabins there was a feeling of southern charm mixed with an affecting solemnity.
The heat beat down on us as I contemplated humanity and the atrocities that we have placed upon each other throughout history. It angers me to think that a person can feel like they have the right to control another person's life. I gazed out of the door of a dark slave cabin. The sugar cane fields clattered in the breeze like old bones. Though we are all of different genders, abilities, and beliefs, these differences and an understanding of them make us all equal. And beautiful.
