Magnolia Mound

I visited my dad in Baton Rouge last October. We spent a week and a half glued to the couch watching Battlestar Galactica, reading by the pool in beautifully hot weather, and enjoying each others company. Before I left, I wanted to visit a local plantation.

Magnolia Mound is rich in southern culture and old beauty. Eunice spoke with kind eyes as she guided us around the main home sharing with us the intricacies of the deep south. As we wandered through the buildings and cabins there was a feeling of southern charm mixed with an affecting solemnity.

The heat beat down on us as I contemplated humanity and the atrocities that we have placed upon each other throughout history. It angers me to think that a person can feel like they have the right to control another person's life. I gazed out of the door of a dark slave cabin. The sugar cane fields clattered in the breeze like old bones. Though we are all of different genders, abilities, and beliefs, these differences and an understanding of them make us all equal. And beautiful.
